The North Island (including Johnstone Strait
and Broughton Archipelago):

Northern Vancouver Island has an odd mystique: wild stretches of coast mixed with some of the island's tallest and most dramatic peaks. Topping it all is sprawling Cape Scott Provincial Park, now more accessible due to an extension to the Cape Scott Trail that extends the route almost to Port Hardy (with a land link hopefully only a few years away). Its remoteness tends to keep the north island probably the least visited region on the island; Port Hardy is a four- to five-hour drive northwest from Nanaimo. Once in the region, however, the range of options is endless – from pleasant beach strolls to demanding mountain hikes and from world-class fishing to whitewater rafting on Nimpkish River .

Recommended places to explore:

Sightseeing: Alert Bay. This wonderful little First Nations community can be reached by ferry from Port McNeil. Look for great little art stores, restaurants, the U'Mista Cultural Centre and its display of masks, plus an assortment of hikes.

Hiking:

The North Coast Trail

Vancouver Island's newest and possibly best trail is now open, and we have all the details / Spring 08

Kayaking/canoeing: God's Pocket Marine Park is part of a wonderful cluster of islands off Port Hardy. This is also a gateway for a more ambitious trip to Cape Sutil and the north coast toward Cape Scott. World-class paddling!

Scuba diving: Browning Wall in Browning Passage between Nigei and Balacava islands is considered one of the world's top diving locations, picked by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top five cold-water dives in the world.
