Cowichan Valley:

The Cowichan Valley is by and large a residential, commercial and industrial corridor extending the length of the Island Highway between the Malahat and Chemainus. Logging remains the economic backbone of the region, bolstered by the private forestry lands to the west of the farming and residential corridor. Some areas are intensely industrial. Crofton and Chemainus are busy pulp mill towns; Cowichan Bay is a major shipping centre. The rest, however, tends toward a rural tranquility dotted with vineyards and sheep farms. Because almost all the land is privately owned, recreation tends to be compressed into a few areas of fairly intense use. Shawnigan Lake is a key cottage area for the region, while Cowichan River is arguably the most popular park for camping and water-based activities. Pockets of wilderness dot the area, though very little remains in a natural state.
